Description:
The scientific program “Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact” (VarSITI) is the current scientific program of SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics) for the period 2014-2018 (http://www.varsiti.org/). VarSITI focuses on the recent and expected future solar activity and its consequences for the Earth, over various time scales from thousands of years to milliseconds, and at various locations from the solar interior to the Earth’s atmosphere. In particular, VarSITI focuses on the interconnections in the Sun-Earth system. Four scientific projects are being carried out under VarSITI: (1) Solar Evolution and Extrema (SEE), (2) International Study of Earth-Affecting Solar Transients (ISEST/MiniMax24), (3) Specification and Prediction of the Coupled Inner-Magnetospheric Environment (SPeCIMEN), and (4) Role Of the Sun and the Middle atmosphere/thermosphere/ionosphere In Climate (ROSMIC). Data from relevant space- and ground-based missions will be utilized in combination with theory and modeling efforts to facilitate the implementation of these projects.
