Message from the Executive Director, ISWI Secretariat
Dear ISWI colleagues,
Hope you are staying safe during the pandemic. Looks like the vaccine for COVID-19 is around the
coroner, but still it may take several months before the beginning of normalcy. The space weather
community has been active on several fronts. NASA is in the process of establishing a Space Weather
Council (SWC), which is a community-based, interdisciplinary forum to provide expert advice on matters
relevant to space weather in support of the NASA Heliophysics Division. The COSPAR Space weather
roadmap is being updated. Early this year, a new effort known as International Space Weather Action
Teams (ISWAT) has started to promote global collaborations in addressing challenges across the field of
space weather. Details on ISWAT can be found in
https://www.iswat-cospar.org/clusters_teams. There are many groups that ISWI colleagues may find interesting. If you are interested in participating in any of these activities, you can approach the contacts given in the above web site.
The next annual steering committee meeting is unlikely to be a face-to-face meeting. We will hold it virtually. One of the important items to discuss during the steering committee meeting and also with the community is how to continue the outreach activities. I am thinking of a couple of possibilities. One is to hold monthly online seminars that the ISWI community can attend. The seminars will cover both science and instrument deployment. The other is to hold a virtual ISWI School over the next few months to continue to reach to students and young scientists. I welcome your opinion and suggestions on these two items. Please send your suggestions to me (nat.gopalswamy[at]nasa.gov) and Pat Doherty (patricia.doherty[at]bc.edu). It may also be worthwhile to have online meeting of all the national coordinators to discuss the educational activities. I will compile the suggestions and summarize them in one of the future ISWI newsletters. In the meanwhile, get your friends and colleagues to subscribe to the ISWI Newsletter, so they can receive information on the educational activities.
